Indiana University High School Journalism Institute (HSJI)

Bloomington, Indiana. Faculty members from Indiana U and around the country teach workshops in journalism and high school media at HSJI. Program designed for high school students who have accepted a position in high school media or for those interested in learning about journalism. Students examine the role of the media, analyze student publications, and develop the skills needed to produce quality publications.

Pre-College Program is a 5-week residential or commuter program in Baltimore, Maryland with classes for college credit in Arts, Sciences and Engineering. Sample majors in medical science, American government/pre-law, computer applications, humanities, and earth and space science.

Discover Hopkins Programs are intensive 2-week residential programs on special topics with college credit. Topics for 2006 in health sciences, environmental and planetary studies, and history.

Women’s Technology Program (WTP)

Cambridge, Massachusetts. Four-week residential summer program in the MIT Dept. of Electrical Engineering and Computer Science (EECS) to introduce high school girls to EECS in the summer after 11th grade. 40 students selected for program every year. Includes rigorous classes in computer science, electrical engineering, and mathematics taught by women PhD candidates in the MIT EECS Department, and allows girls to explore through hands-on experiments and team-based projects.

Research Science Institute (RSI) at MIT

RSI, sponsored by the Center for Excellence in Education and MIT, is a rigorous summer academic program that emphasizes advanced theory and research in mathematics, the sciences, and engineering. 6-week program to be held in June to August at MIT, Cambridge, Massachusetts in 2006. All fees paid except transportation. College-level courses and research skills are taught by professors and nationally recognized teachers. Many RSI student research projects have garnered top awards in the annual Intel Science Talent Search, the Siemens-Westinghouse Science and Technology Competition, and the All-USA High School Academic Scholarship.

Like RSI but for humanities. Various campuses: Cornell; Michigan; UT-Austin; Washington U-St Louis. TASPers attend seminars led by university faculty members. The program seminars are similar to upper-level college classes.  The faculty members, who are selected from the country’s best institutions, design programs in which students read texts carefully and critically and express and analyze ideas in their discussions and writings.
