Summer 2011 - Gain a Head Start! Workshop Schedule
Day 1?> | Complete self-evaluation survey; think through interests and preferences. Identify suitable list of colleges and universities; evaluate chances of admission. | Narrow down list of “reach”, “match” and “safety” schools. How will admission committees evaluate you as an applicant? | Design “application strategy” for each student. Early Action, Early Decision or regular decision? | Overview of Common Application: what to look out for; start to fill in Common Application. | Check for errors, omissions and inconsistencies; explain personal, special circumstances. | Homework: research list of schools identified. |
Day 2?> | Review list of schools identified in Day 1, brainstorm and modify if necessary. Complete Common Application. | Get to know yourself better: what’s special about you. Draft your personal Activities, Services, and Awards Profile (ASAP). | Brainstorm and identify “what to highlight” in your personal profile. | Review and re-write “ASAP” personal profile. | Homework: preview application essay topics for Day 3. |
Day 3?> | Choose appropriate topic(s) for essays and personal statements. | Conceptualize, draft and revise your essays and personal statements. We don’t write your essays, but will review and comment on content, structure, style, vocabulary and grammar. | Aim to make multiple drafts until your essays and statements are in optimal shape Finish at least one long and one short essay. | Learn interview techniques and participate in interview practice. | Homework: review essays and personal statements; make them better. |
Day 4 | Continue to work on essays and personal statements. Write essays on other topics; choose the best essay. Answer short questions on applications. | Learn test prep techniques. Practice SAT and sample tests. | We offer support, guidance and advice on specific needs unique to each student. Each student will receive a detailed, customized report on application strategy that increases his or her chance of university acceptance. | Choose one of two sessions this summer: Session 1: July 25-28, 2011 (Monday-Thursday) Session 2: August 1-4, 2011 (Monday-Thursday) (9am to noon and 1-6pm every day)
